Eulogy for William George YATES for the St Peter's Parish magazine April 1952 by Revd. Tunnadine.
The death of William Yates on the 13th. March,1952, has taken from our midst a much respected member of our local community and a beloved member of our Church.
Appointed people's warden in 1931, it was to him I turned (his co-warden was a sick man) for advice and help when I first came to the parish in 1934 . Our acquaintance deepened into a firm friendship with the passing years. He held office as warden for fifteen years, until in 1946 he asked to be released, to the genuine regret of the whole congregation.
It would be hard to estimate what the parish owes to his devoted service and sterling worth. A quiet and thoughtful man, his views always commanded the serious attention of the Church Council in matters of church business and policy. Yet he could brighten a tedious meeting with a dry humour all his own. Reverent by nature, this quality was reflected in his business, as many morners can testify, and in his churchmanship. I 1ook back with gratitude to occasions when his tactful advice restrained my impetuosity. For thirty years he struggled with courage and cheerfulness against a chronic condition which brought him to the end of his course with rather unexpected suddenness on the anniversary of his daughter Freda's death. May God grant him rest, and to Mrs. Yates and Mrs. Beach and Elaine consolation and support. They are assured of our sympathy.
William married Sarah Millard, daughter of Thomas Millard and Deborah Richards, 8 Apr 1912 in Providence Chapel, Coseley, Staffordshire. (Sarah Millard was born 1 Apr 1886 in Hockley Lane, Coseley, Staffordshire, died 14 Apr 1970 in Guest Hospital, Dudley, West Midlands and was buried 17 Apr 1970 in St Peter's Church, Upper Gornal, Staffordshire.)
