The batch numbers are used in online Familysearch in the IGI Custom Search area when one wants to search on a surname without a first name. The program then searches the parish belonging to the batch number and produces all entries with that surname that fit the other criteria (Father, Mother, Spouse etc).
The initial letters of the batch numbers are codes indicating the type of event covered and the range of years in which the events occurred. So "M" and "A" are always marriages, "C", "J", "K" and P" are christenings and "E" is a miscellaneous event (whatever that is). There may be other letters in use.
